The American Red Cross is well known for its Aquatics programs. The Northern Miami Valley Chapter offers a variety of water safety courses throughout the summer. Many of these courses fill up quickly and can only be offered during the summer months, so please call the Chapter at 937.332.1414 or 937.492.6151 for availability.
Here are the courses that we offer:
Lifeguarding
Learn the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare lifeguarding candidates to recognize emergencies, respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and other incidents. This course meets the current Emergency Cardiac Care guidelines and includes CPR, First Aid and Preventing Disease Transmission components. 28.5 hour course.
Prerequisites:
A. 15 years of age
B. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
1. 100 yards front crawl, using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick
2. 100 yards of breaststroke
3. 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and/or breaststroke.
C. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object above the water.
Water Safety Instructor
Train instructor candidates to teach the Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program; the six levels of the Learn to Swim Program; the Basic Water Rescue and Water Safety Instructor Aide courses; and, for eligible individuals, the Safety Training for Swim Coaches course. 36.0 hour course.
Prerequisites:
-- Minimum age of 15.
-- Successfully complete the instructor course written pretest with a minimum score of 80 percent or better. Successfully complete instructor course skills pretest consisting of water safety and swimming skills.
